Automobile
A complete body made of carbon: This is what the all-electric BMW i3 and i8 shoot down the road with – despite the extra weight due to the battery. The production of carbon parts is highly industrialized: Even complex composite components – such as a complete side frame of the BMW i3 Life module – can be produced automatically and economically.
The carbon components are manufactured in large molds from quenched and tempered mold steel. For the exterior molds of the two BMW vehicles, Buderus Edelstahl supplies the perfect plastic mold steel: THRUHARD SUPREME®. Thanks to its unique composition, this patented special alloy permits high hardness right into the core area of the plastic molds.
It thus forms the basis for the innovative molds that make BMW electric vehicles unmistakable on the road.
